Wings try to keep Playoff Dreams Alive

Wings try to keep Playoff Dreams Alive

After the roughest starting season in years, the Detroit Red Wings have started the playoffs. With just over a month left in the season, the Wings were fighting for the eighth and last playoff spot in their division. Then it clicked. The goal scorers and playmakers, injured and absent for the first part of the season, found their chemistry and put the Wings on an unprecedented winning streak. The Wings then made a startling run into a fifth place playoff spot.

Now the end of their first playoff series has come to a shockingly close end; however, the Wings skated away from the seven game series victorious, triumphing over the Phoenix Coyotes. Detroit now turns their heads towards the San Jose Sharks.

The first series ended in an unexpected blowout with a 6-2 win over the Coyotes. In contrast the series was up and down for Detroit, winning by large margins or losing by large margins.
“When it clicks, Detroit is unstoppable, but when they make mistakes, one leads to another” said Ben Gleichert, a dedicated Wings fan and junior at CHS.

Now Detroit faces its biggest challenge yet. Behind two games to none against the heavily favored San Jose Sharks, Detroit looks to upset the Sharks on the Shark’s home ice. “Detroit got a break against the Coyotes, who did not consistently pose an offensive threat, but Detroit needs to score a lot to win this next series.” explained Gleichert.

Detroit fans still maintain a hopeful attitude; however, the challenge is no small task. With two losses on home ice the Wings must now play in what is referred to as the shark tank. The home rink of the Sharks is infamous throughout the NHL for being one of the loudest stadiums. “ It’s going to be a fight, but I have faith in the Wings. I am already looking to buy tickets for game seven in Detroit.” said Ben Dengiz, a junior at CHS.
