Marcy McCormick’s classroom, room 317, buzzed with excitement and anticipation during lunch on Monday, September 16. Making its debut this year, Biology Club, co-founded by sophomore Elizabeth Clark and junior Mia Rubenstein, gathered to discuss its plans and goals for the year.
“I knew that there were a lot of clubs at Community that had science-related themes, but just not biology,” Clark said. Her passion for biology goes all the way back to middle school.
“I really liked learning about anatomy and cells and really anything [about] life. Over time I started to learn more about biology and really get into looking at cells and learning how they work,” Clark said. This passion encouraged her to introduce others to the topic and create a space for them to learn more. It’s an especially great place for those interested in medical careers.
“It’s great for people who want to go into a medical field because it gives them experience and some knowledge,” Rubenstein said.
“It’s going to be hands-on and interactive and we are all going to learn a lot together,” Clark said. The founding duo has many goals for the club.
“We want doctors to come in and talk to us and teach us. We also want to possibly do field trips and get out and learn hands-on,” Rubenstein said.
Nearly a dozen students of all grades attended the club’s first meeting on Monday, with a variety of reasons for joining. Among them was freshman Neil Carlin.
“I want to be a biomedical major in college, so I figured Biology Club is a good way to start. So far, it seems really cool,” Carlin said. Freshman Jenny Ruff is also interested in a biology-related career.
“I joined because I want to be a hematologist,” Ruff said.
Junior Ellie Robins joined the club to expand on what she learned in Community’s FOS (Foundations of Science) program.
“In FOS 2, I found bio[logy] very fun and engaging and wanted to talk more about biology with more people who felt the same way,” Robins said.
The founders encourage everyone to join.
“It’s a great place to make new friends with the same interests as you,” Clark said. The club meets every Monday in room 317 during lunch.
