May 21st. The date the Red Cross was established, the date Charles Lindbergh touches down at Le Bourget field, completing the first solo trans-Atlantic flight. It is also the birthdays of jazz pianist Fats Waller, and notorious rapper Biggie Smalls.

Closer to home, however, May 21st is the birthday of Community High School’s own Courtney Kiley, Emma Huntley, and Ed Kulka.

Courtney Kiley, honored to share her birthday with such persons, is turning twenty nine. Emma has turned eighteen, a mere thirty eight years younger than Ed Kulka’s ripe age of fifty six.

In the movies, everybody has a list of things to do before they turn thirty. FOS 1 and physics instructor Courtney Kiley is almost at that age, and she herself has unaccomplished goals. She always wanted to go out West, but never has. Nor has she had the children she expected, but according to Kiley, “I’m fine with that.”

Emma Huntley has been out West, however. In her own list of things not accomplished by eighteen, she cannot drive, as little as she cares. Huntley says: “I can’t eat Trix anymore, says John.” Emma Huntley, is no longer a kid.

Ed Kulka had little to say, rushing as he was with full Forum business. He’s still going strong as a teacher and a Forum leader. He is spending his birthday in Chicago, managing twentysome kids.

Birthdays bring a change, as Courtney Kiley says: “It’s weird to think that next year I’ll be turning thirty.” According to Senior Emma Huntley, however, “It’s everyone’s birthday today.”
