Dance Body Winter Concert: A Success for the 31st Time

Dance Body Winter Concert: A Success for the 31st Time

“Every year, we forget how ridiculously fast the show comes together,” said Annie Flynn about Community High School’s Dance Body winter concert on Friday, January 21. The performance was Dance Body’s 31st annual winter show.

The concert was composed of 18 dances. The first dance was choreographed by Connie Trahar, the Dance Body director, but the other dances were choreographed by students.

Most of the girls in Dance Body have been dancing at a studio for years. A junior at Skyline, Hailey Keen has been dancing since she was three years old and joined Dance Body her freshman year.

“[When you choreograph a dance] you have to have an idea of what you want, like what kind of dance, the emotion, and you have to pick a song,” Keen said. Having the opportunity to choreograph a dance and teach it to your peers is something that doesn’t happen very often in dance studios. This is part of what makes Dance Body so unique and sets it apart from other dance companies.

“It’s a chance to take what you’ve been working for for so long and turn it into something that’s your own,” said Flynn, a CHS senior. “It’s movement that someone has taught you but you’ve taken it and made it yours…You don’t get that anywhere else.”

Flynn has been dancing for about 10 years; it has been a huge part of her life. “This is an opportunity that none of the other schools have and we’re really, really lucky to have it at Community. It’s kind of crazy, actually.” Flynn has been doing Dance Body since her sophomore year. CHS senior Lizzie Rolston, however, started her freshman year.

“It’s my home, basically,” Rolston said about Dance Body. Rolston feels that the night’s performance went really well. “Everybody put their all into it, and it just turned out fantastic.”

For seniors like Rolston and Flynn, there was a big feeling of nostalgia in their second-to-last Dance Body recital. Rolston is serious about taking dance beyond high school. Although she hasn’t heard back from U of M, she has already gotten accepted into Columbia College. “Goodbye, Dance Body. Hello, something else!” Rolston said.

While Rolston and Flynn are on their last semester of Dance Body, freshmen Katie Taub and Sofia Kromis are just getting started. Both Taub and Kromis enjoy Dance Body a lot and were happy with the winter recital. “It was just really fun and awesome,” said Kromis.

Brian Miller, one of Community High School’s English teachers, went to the performance. Miller enjoys getting the opportunity to see students outside of the classroom doing what they love. “Their hearts and souls are behind it. It was beautiful.”

Overall, the Dance Body concert was a success for Dance Body seniors, freshman, audience members, and everybody in between.

“The night of the show is just so hype and so ridiculous and we just have so much fun,” Flynn said. “And every year I forget that that’s my favorite feeling in the world.”
