With lighted balloons bobbing above the heads of al fresco diners on Main Street last Saturday, the annual Light the Night walk began. This event raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and spreads awareness for blood cancers.

Participants met at The Edison Center for a ceremony preceding the walk. At the ceremony even officials honored survivors and victims of blood cancer as well as the teams that raised the most money for Light the Night. Each team raises funds in honor of a survivor or in memory of a patient.

Walkers who are survivors of blood cancer carry white balloons. Those who participate as supporters carry red balloons, and family and friends walking to remember a loved one carry gold balloons. The balloons flickered while the participants walked through downtown Ann Arbor as it grew darker.

Team Emma, founded in honor of Emma Rubenstein, the daughter of CHS math teacher Anne Thomas, has participated in Light the Night the past three years. Team Emma includes a number of CHS students who have helped in fundraising efforts that raised nearly $4000 this year.
