“Just to supply the local hospitals for one week we need 900 pints of blood,” said Community High School junior Morgan Harvey. Quinn Strassel’s forum organized a blood drive on Friday April 26 through The American Red Cross. The blood drive took place in the media center throughout the whole school day.
Harvey has been the key organizer for the drive. Melissa Krienke organized it last year while Harvey helped her. So this year Harvey was the next in line to take on the responsibility. She communicated with a representative from The American Red Cross to help coordinate the day’s events. Her other important job was to recruit people. There were 48 slots and their goal was to collect 26 pints of blood.
“There’s a 97% chance that you’ll know somebody or you will need a blood transfusion. And with just like one pint you can save three lives, it’s a huge thing. Everybody needs it,” said Harvey. The blood drawing takes 6-10 minutes and then you are monitored for 15 minutes afterwards to make sure you are stable. The donaters get to eat a free cookie after their blood is drawn.
The day was a success. They had to run overtime because they had so many appointments. “I’m really happy our forum is able to host and organize something that helps our community and so easily gets everyone involved,” said Harvey. “I can’t wait to beat our record next year.”
