Commstock & Science, Arts & Letters Night

CHS celebrated its artists with Commstock & Science, Arts & Letters Night on Friday, May 17.

Music, science and art. That is what CHS’s annual Commstock and Science, Arts & Letters

Night is all about. On Friday, May 17, from 3:30 to 6:30, students and their families were welcomed into the school for quite the celebration. A music festival and an art show all in one, the second-floor hallway was full of activity: free ice cream and popcorn, club fundraisers, student-made artwork and projects as well as different student bands performing in the Craft Theatre.

But just as special as Commstock and Science, Arts & Letters Night is for visitors, it is equally special for those being showcased. Lila Fetter, a member of one of the bands that performed at Commstock has found the event to be a key part of her musical journey. Having performed for the event three years in a row, it has given Fetter the opportunity to really improve and hone her craft.

“Commstock has definitely been one of my favorite parts of my Community experience,” Fetter said. “I remember my first time performing at Commstock and I was so nervous. But looking out into the crowd and seeing my classmates sing lyrics that I had written is something I’ll never forget”

For Fetter and many other students, Commstock and Science, Arts & Letters Night is a chance to show off their creativity. Whether they’ve written a song or made a painting, that work is to be celebrated. And while the arts are already a large part of Community’s culture, Commstock and Science, Arts & Letters Night is a time where the painters, poets, and musicians really get to shine.

“I think a lot of people have this wrong assumption that Community kids don’t do anything,” Fetter said. “But anyone that comes to Commstock will leave thinking, ‘Wow! Community is so cool!’ The kids here are so creative and passionate about what they do, and I’m proud to say I’m one of them.”

A testament to all the planning by Forum Council and the countless other students involved, the event was a hit. A celebration for the arts, for the hard work students have put in throughout the school year and for Community as a whole. So, as yet another Commstock and Science, Arts & Letters Night enters the books, students, staff and parents alike can only look forward to the next.
