With the school year drawing to a close, Community Ensemble Theatre (CET) held its annual student board election on Monday, April. 27, in the Craft Theater. Nine committed students ran for positions in this year’s election, and six of them secured a spot on the student board.
The election started at 11:15 a.m. with each candidate giving a speech explaining why they would like to serve as a member of the board. Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates were allotted one minute each to give their speech, while other positions had 30 seconds. Once the speeches concluded, CET’s director, Emily Wilson-Tobin, sent out a form so that CET members could vote along with videos of each speech for those unable to attend elections in person. The results were announced later that day at 6:45 p.m.
Junior Lucy Lowenschuss and sophomore Jameson Grice are members of the current student board who were elected to serve a different position on next year’s board. Lowenschuss is currently the publicist for CET and will serve as the president of the board next year. Grice is the current underclassperson representative, and next year he will be the merchandise manager. Both Lowenschuss and Grice feel that the time they spent serving on the board this year will impact how they lead next year.
“I definitely looked up to the past members of the board, and I’ve really loved working closely with them,” Lowenschuss said. “I think seeing how the presidents took on their roles will help me achieve my goals and continue their legacy and the legacy of CET. And just watching everyone do their roles on the board has given me a lot of insight into how to help everyone in the program be successful.”
The main thing Grice has learned while sitting on the board this year has been communication between the freshmen and sophomores in CET and the board. He organized a buddy system within the program where upperclassmen could check in and support the underclassmen. Grice has already begun communicating with members of CET to hear what they want for next year’s merchandise.
“A lot of people are talking about bringing sweatpants back or pajama pants,” Grice said. “And I’ve heard a lot of people talk about socks, so I think bringing those would be fun.”
Junior Rosie Matish has wanted to be a member of the student board for many years and was elected to be the vice president next year.
“I’ve wanted to be on the board for a long time, because I think that it’s a place where I could have a really good impact,” Matish said. “ I’m excited to be vice president because it’s not focused on one specific thing, so you can see the big picture of CET, and I think I would be pretty good at that.”
Matish has been a part of CET since her freshman year, along with Lowenschuss, and is excited to work with Lowenschuss and thinks they will make a good team.
Unlike Matish, freshman Stella Vorlicek never considered the student board as an option for her until she was approached by friends from CET.
“I originally wasn’t planning on running,” Vorlicek said. “Then a few juniors actually reached out, and they were like, ‘Stella, you should totally run for underclassmen rep. We really need you as someone to go to because you’re so cool and you’d do so great at it.’”
Vorlicek hopes that as the newly elected underclassperson representative she will be able to continue existing systems, such as the buddy mentorship program, to help bridge the cap between newer CET members and those with a lot of experience.
