The Halloween Dance is a Long-Standing Tradition at Community High

Halloween is one of the most anticipated days of the year.  Whether it’s the crazy costumes, hanging out with friends, or the enormous amounts of candy, October 31st is definitely considered a highlight of the year for many people.  Which is why Judith DeWoskin, an English teacher at Community High School, has a tradition of hosting a Halloween Dance the Friday before Halloween with her forum.

One of the many posters advertising the Halloween Dance that can be found around Community High.

The DeWoskin forum has been organizing the Halloween dance for a very long time.  So long, in fact, that DeWoskin herself isn’t exactly sure when it began.  “It could be 20 years old, it could be older than 20 years old because I’ve been here for 27 or so, 28 years and I’ve done it for a long, long, long time,” DeWoskin said.  The dance has changed a lot over the years.  In the past, the forum would have to use a lot of their money to pay for a DJ or a live band, but now they have the technology to play the music themselves.  “Kids make play lists.  We have two dads that are going to be up in the music booth and people sync iPods into something, and the music is free and then everyone gets the music that they want.  And it’s wonderful.”

“My favorite part [of the dance] is the dancing,” DeWoskin said.  “I love the energy in the room.  Although you guys dance these days in a very strange way.  It’s mostly like a bunch of pogo sticks jumping up and down,” DeWoskin laughed.

Some of the proceeds from the dance will be donated to charity.  “This year we’re going to give a part of it to the Food Gatherers, and the rest we’re going to keep for our Spring forum trip,” DeWoskin said.

The dance is in the Craft Theater on Friday, October 29th from 8:00-11:00 pm.  Tickets are $3 in advance, $4 at the door if you’re wearing a costume, and $5 if you aren’t wearing one.  “It’s so much fun.  Everybody’s wearing really cool costumes and there’s great music,” said Hannah King, a member of the DeWoskin forum.  “Everyone should definitely come!”
