“Houdini” Review

Dua Lipa won’t disappoint us.
Houdini+Review

Dua Lipa is an icon in the modern music and fashion scenes. Her single, “Houdini,” is a relatable song that reestablishes her spot at the top of the industry.

“Houdini” was Lipa’s first independent release since her “Future Nostalgia” album. The song describes the act of ghosting, something all too relevant on this side of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many people lost touch with friends, stopped responding to the infinite number of incoming messages, and turned off their cameras in Zoom meetings during the past few years. “Houdini” encapsulates the highs and lows of a recent disaster that everyone experienced.

Lipa brought back her disco-style sounds and lighthearted approach to serious societal issues. Ghosting can seem like a small, one-time action but reflects something greater. “Future Nostalgia” was Lipa’s second studio album. Titles like “Boys Will Be Boys” and “Future Nostalgia” are examples of Lipa introducing other serious topics such as gender roles.

The Pandemic was hitting the world just as “Future Nostalgia” was released in 2020. The album that made Lipa famous helped to connect the world in a time of crisis. Now, “Houdini” gives us a way to reflect.

“Houdini” is teasing what will be Lipa’s third studio album. Though a release date has not yet been announced for the album, “Houdini” assures listeners that there are great things to come.
