In a time of penny-pinching and dollar-stretching, the fashion industry seeks to provide clothes that withstand the ephemera and result in purchases. For Fall 2009, the best collections provided garments that were pragmatic yet still had an edge.

Fur was a prominent starting point for many designers, because it can invigorate a look quickly with not much. A trim, or a full coat (as seen in the accompanying photos) can make any banal outfit seem infinitely more fanciful and exciting.

Another feature of this season was the 40s revival. Appealing to those looking for a more practical approach to clothing that still made a statement, this trend was seen at best with dresses cut on the bias in black or anything with a strong, Joan Crawford-esque shoulder.

Considering that most will not be able just go out and grab every item that meets a sartorial desire, try think of items as investments. If you’re looking to buy a staple (e.g coats, boots), spend the extra cash and buy something that is well-made and will last. For things that are “in” or “now” spend less and go for something more affordable, like a fur collar.

Whether you take the pragmatic approach and go for the sensible 40s inspired dresses or opt for an extravagant fur, the season’s bound to meet your sartorial needs in some form; just make sure the price meets the value.
