Top 5 Sports Upsets of 2017

If you ask any fan, an upset is one of the most thrilling occurrences in sports. It constitutes an underdog overcoming the favorite in a shocking fashion, despite a lesser record or less talent. Upsets remind us that anything can happen in a game, no matter the gap in skill. To close out the year, let’s take a look at the top five greatest upsets of 2017.

1. Justin Gatlin defeats Usain Bolt in IAAF 100 meter championships

The unlikely American hero shocked the world at the IAAF Championships in London this past August in the 100 meter championships by edging out the great Usain Bolt on his farewell race with a time of 9.92 seconds. Bolt had a very slow start which created a gap he couldn’t make up. After the finish of the race, Gatlin bowed to Usain in recognition of everything he’s done for the sport.

2. Wisconsin edges out Villanova in second round of NCAA Tournament

No tournament yields greater upsets than the NCAA basketball tournament, especially this past year. One of the noteworthy anomalies was No. 8 seed Wisconsin coming back to stun No. 1 seed and defending national champs Villanova. The badgers ended the game on 15-5 run to advance to the sweet 16 and send Villanova packing their bags.

3. Syracuse over Clemson, 27-24

In week 7 of college football, an unranked Syracuse handed the No. 2 Clemson Tigers their first and only loss of the regular season in a 27-24 shocker. Clemson was able to bounce back and make it into the playoffs as the No. 1 seed, but it remains the greatest upset of Clemson’s last 40 seasons. The Orange earned it.

4. Yankees send home Indians in ALDS series win

The Indians were a juggernaut in the 2017 regular season, accomplishing a record 22 game win streak and catching fire late in the season by winning 33 of their last 37 games. This made the Yankees series comeback over the Indians in the first round of the playoffs all the more mind-boggling. The favorites to win the World Series were up 2-0 in the series before the Yankees won three straight to win the best of 5 and move on to Houston.

5. Chicago Bears defeat Carolina Panthers, 17-3

The Bears won four games this year, and this was one. Coming in October, the defense held the fearsome Carolina offense to only a field goal the entire game. It was one of the largest upsets of the NFL season, and the year in sports.
